IEC 60079

IEC 60079 is the IEC standard series for explosive atmospheres. It defines equipment, installation, inspection and protection concepts used by ATEX and IECEx.

IEC 60079 is the International Electrotechnical Commission standard series for equipment and work in explosive atmospheres. It provides the technical basis used by IECEx, much of ATEX, and many national hazardous-area schemes. The series covers gases, vapours, combustible dusts, equipment construction, installation, inspection, repair and area classification.

For industrial cleaning equipment, IEC 60079 matters whenever a horn, solenoid, junction box, controller or local instrument is installed in a zone where flammable gas, solvent vapour, combustible dust or hybrid mixtures may occur.

The exact part depends on the protection concept. A pneumatic sonic horn body may have no electrical ignition source, but its solenoid valve, limit switch, controller, cable gland and junction box do.

Marking and specification

IEC 60079 markings define equipment group, category or equipment protection level, gas or dust suitability, temperature class, ambient range and protection concept. Procurement should specify the zone, gas group or dust group, temperature class, ambient temperature, enclosure material, ingress protection and certification route rather than asking only for "Ex rated" equipment.

For acoustic-cleaning packages, the usual design split is to keep the horn body simple and put certified electrical components in accessible, cooler positions. Remote solenoids, stainless tubing, purge arrangements or pneumatic-only actuation may reduce the amount of electrical equipment inside the hazardous area.

Maintenance implications

IEC 60079 is not only a purchase requirement. Installation and inspection practices are part of compliance. Cable glands, earth bonding, enclosure bolts, seals, unused entries, nameplates, corrosion and replacement parts must remain consistent with the certificate. A non-certified solenoid swapped in during maintenance can invalidate the hazardous-area protection even if the horn itself has not changed.

Project and inspection detail

Hazardous-area design starts with area classification, not with a catalogue choice. The classification should define zone, gas or dust group, temperature class, ambient range and abnormal operating cases such as start-up, cleaning, blocked ventilation or spill recovery. Only then can the acoustic-cleaning package be split into suitable mechanical, pneumatic and electrical parts.

For a sonic-horn installation, common certificate-sensitive details include solenoid coil rating, junction-box entries, cable glands, earth continuity, purge or pressurisation arrangements, enclosure temperature rise and the surface temperature of parts exposed to hot gas. Dust service also needs attention to layer build-up on enclosures, because an external dust layer can insulate equipment and raise surface temperature.

Inspection under IEC 60079-17 is a live maintenance obligation. Teams should keep certificate documents, installed-equipment lists, repair records and inspection grades aligned. Replacing a failed coil, moving a junction box, drilling an extra conduit entry or painting over a nameplate can turn a compliant installation into a non-compliant one. For cleaning packages in remote boiler or silo areas, that documentation discipline is often the hardest part of the standard to sustain.
