Class I Div 1 and Class I Div 2 are the US National Electrical Code (NEC) classifications for hazardous areas where flammable gases or vapours are or could be present. The NEC framework is the dominant US standard, paralleling but not identical to the ATEX / IECEx zone system used in the rest of the world.

NEC also adopts the IEC zone system (Zone 0/1/2 for gas, Zone 20/21/22 for dust) for newer installations alongside the legacy Class/Division system.
Practical implications for sonic horns
US power-plant and refinery sonic-horn purchases routinely specify Class I Div 2 or Class II Div 2 certification depending on the application. European-sourced horns typically carry both ATEX and a third-party-certified NEC equivalent to satisfy US buyers.
Practical distinction
Class I covers flammable gases or vapours. Division 1 means an ignitable concentration can exist during normal operation, during frequent maintenance, or because leakage is expected. Division 2 means the material is normally contained and would be present only after abnormal failure, ventilation loss or accidental release.
This distinction affects the protection method allowed for electrical equipment. A solenoid valve, junction box, pressure switch or control panel that is acceptable in Division 2 may be unacceptable in Division 1 unless it has the right explosion-proof, intrinsically safe or purged protection concept.
Relevance to acoustic-cleaning packages
Sonic horns are pneumatic at the horn body, but the package still includes electrical and control components. Hazardous-area review covers solenoids, limit switches, local panels, cable glands, earth bonding and any sensors used for pressure or acoustic feedback. The classification also affects where maintenance staff can open enclosures or disconnect wiring.
The area classification is a site responsibility. The equipment supplier provides rated components and documentation, but the plant defines the classified extent around vessels, ducts, fuel systems, solvent handling or gas-cleaning equipment. A horn installed on a refinery duct, coke-oven gas system or chemical plant silo may therefore require different hardware from the same horn installed on a cement preheater.
Documentation and safety
Procurement should check class, division, group, temperature code and enclosure rating together. The gas group identifies ignition energy and explosion-pressure behaviour; the temperature code ensures the equipment surface temperature stays below the autoignition temperature of the gas or vapour. Inspection then verifies seals, glands, conduit, purge air and maintenance records, because a certified component can be made unsafe by poor installation.
Field checks
Hazardous-area classification starts with the material release scenario, not with the equipment catalogue. Engineers identify whether flammable gas or vapour can be present, how often it is present, and whether normal ventilation or containment keeps it below a dangerous concentration. That decision sets the Division 1 or Division 2 basis, and then the equipment marking, wiring method, sealing fittings and maintenance practices have to match.
For acoustic-cleaning packages, the review covers solenoid valves, junction boxes, pressure switches, local isolators, cable glands, purge panels and any horn-mounted accessories. The horn body itself may be pneumatic, but the complete package can still introduce ignition sources through electrical control or static discharge. Maintenance matters because replacing a certified component with an ordinary part can defeat the area rating. Plants should keep drawings, classification documents and inspection records aligned so future repairs do not quietly change the protection basis.
The classification also affects troubleshooting. Opening an enclosure, using a test meter, replacing a coil or bypassing an interlock can require a gas-free certificate or hot-work control depending on the area. The safe method of maintenance is therefore part of the design, not an afterthought.
