TA Luft 2021 is the revised German "Technical Instructions on Air Quality Control" for industrial installations. It supports permitting and operation under German air-immission law by setting requirements for emission control, stack discharge, monitoring, dispersion, best available techniques and protection of human health and the environment.

For plant operators, TA Luft is not a piece of equipment. It is a regulatory framework that influences the dust, acid gas, odour and pollutant limits that the equipment must meet.

Industrial implications

TA Luft can affect combustion plants, waste treatment, cement, chemicals, metals, biomass, wood processing and many other industrial sectors. Depending on installation type, it may influence:

  • Emission limit values for dust and specific pollutants
  • Monitoring frequency and measurement method
  • Stack height and dispersion requirements
  • Odour and fugitive-emission expectations
  • Requirements for existing plants during retrofit or permit changes
  • The evidence needed to show that abatement equipment is suitable

The practical result is often tighter attention to availability. A dust collector, scrubber or ESP that meets its design value only when perfectly clean may not be adequate if fouling regularly pushes it out of range.

Maintenance and cleaning relevance

Cleaning systems do not provide compliance by themselves, but they help abatement equipment stay within its intended operating window.
