Flange standards (DN and ANSI)
DN (EN 1092 European) and ANSI B16.5 flanges are the dominant industrial mounting standards. Sonic horns typically come with DN50-DN200 or ANSI 2-8 inch 150 lb mounting flanges.

Flange standards define the bolted circular interfaces used to connect pipes, ducts, valves, nozzles and mounted equipment. For Sylio-style equipment, the practical distinction is usually between European DN/PN flanges and North American ANSI or ASME inch-class flanges.
DN and ANSI naming
DN is the nominal metric size used in European standards such as EN 1092. PN is the nominal pressure class. ANSI language is still common in industry for ASME B16.5 flanges, where sizes are in inches and pressure classes include 150, 300 and higher classes. A DN100 PN10 flange is not the same bolt pattern as a 4 inch Class 150 flange, even when the bore looks similar.
Why it matters for sonic horns
A sonic horn is often mounted to a vessel or duct through a welded nozzle and flange. The flange sets bolt count, bolt circle, gasket size, face type, nozzle bore and installation clearance. If the site specification calls for DN flanges and the supplied horn has an ANSI pattern, the installation can be delayed by adapters, rework or hot-work permits.
Design checks
Important checks include nominal size, pressure class, material, face finish, raised-face or flat-face requirement, gasket compatibility, bolt material, corrosion allowance and whether the flange is structural enough to carry horn mass and vibration. On thin duct walls, the flange may need a reinforcing pad or stub pipe rather than being welded directly to casing plate.
Maintenance implications
Flanged horn mounts should remain gas-tight under temperature cycling and acoustic firing. Loose bolts, damaged gaskets, warped nozzles and corrosion under insulation can leak hot gas, dust or odour. Standardising flange interfaces across a plant simplifies spare horns, blanks, silencers and temporary covers.
Field-fit notes
Before fabrication, the site should confirm the standard, nominal size, pressure class and flange face from drawings or field measurement, not from memory. Brownfield plants often contain mixed standards after decades of projects. Bolt-hole orientation should also be specified for mounted equipment so the horn or accessory sits in the intended position. If an adapter spool is needed, it should be treated as a pressure and structural component, with gasket access and lifting clearance considered.
Field use and failure points
Flange standards matter because two flanges with similar nominal sizes may not have the same outside diameter, bolt circle, pressure class or gasket seating face. DN and NPS identify approximate pipe size, while EN, ASME and other standards define the actual dimensions and ratings. Plant modifications should therefore verify the mating standard, pressure class, face type, material, gasket, bolt grade and design temperature before ordering a spool or valve.
Common field failures include mixed standards, wrong gasket dimensions, bolt yielding, uneven tightening, flange rotation, corrosion under insulation and leakage after thermal cycling. In dusty or acoustic-cleaning service, flange integrity also affects air in-leakage. A small leak in an ESP, baghouse or duct can cool the gas, pull moisture into ash, disturb sound propagation and create local corrosion or build-up.
